The more generalised use of e-prescriptions makes it possible for consumers to buy their prescription-only medicines not only in traditional pharmacies but also through online pharmacies.
There are now more than one hundred Finnish online pharmacies, and about ten of them are also selling prescription-only medicines. In Finland, dispensing prescription-only medicines online has been possible since the year 2012 while the online purchase of self-care medicines has been an option since 2011. The Finnish Medicines Agency FIMEA keeps a list of legal online pharmacies.
Yliopiston Apteekki (“the University Pharmacy”) renewed its online pharmacy this autumn, complementing the online services with the possibility to discuss with a pharmacist through a secure connection. Pharmacists are accessible online every day between 7.00 and 24.00.The package leaflet of medicine or the availability of particular products in each pharmacy point of business can also be checked through the online pharmacies.
Online pharmacies can make life easier for people involved in their busy daily routines or living far away from a pharmacy, the physically impaired or those caring for their aged parents. The medicines are delivered by the online pharmacy either to the customer’s home or the closest pick-up point in a couple of weekdays from the purchase.
