Pharmaceutical manufacturing in Finland
Finland has pharmaceutical manufacturers producing prescription and self-care medicines, as well as contract manufacturers of medicines.
Pharmaceutical manufacturing is strictly regulated and controlled. The manufacturing follows the GMP guidelines (Good Manufacturing Practices). In addition to efficient self-controls, the plants are subject to repeated inspections by the authorities. In Finland, the Finnish Medicines Agency supervises the GMP compliance.
During the past few decades, Finnish pharmaceutical production has been in decline but there are still some manufacturers operating in the country.
There are some large-scale production facilities
- Bayer in Turku
- Orion in Espoo
- Santen in Tampere
With smaller-scale operations, there are also some Finland-based companies manufacturing self-care medicines and a few contract manufacturers.
Specialised competence enhances plant status
Finland-based manufacturing operations are based on special expertise in selected areas, such as
- polymers in hormonal IUDs
- septic production of ocular medicines.
A significant share of the specialised products is exported.
