Pharmaceutical research has great significance for Finland

Finland has a long track record in clinical trials. However, the number of new trials is decreasing. To maintain a high level of competence, it is important for both society and the scientific community to safeguard the future of research.

In Finland, pharmaceutical companies of various sizes, research companies specialised in various steps of pharmaceutical development, and academic researchers perform basic pharmaceutical research and clinical trials that are also noteworthy by international standards.

High-quality clinical trials call for

  • a good research environment
  • smooth process of evaluation by the authorities
  • cost-efficiency
  • realistic assessment of patient numbers and required research times
  • a positive research attitude shown by the environment
  • research opportunities within the healthcare system.
  • Safeguarding future research is imperative

Research plays an important role for Finland, and therefore it is important to safeguard its future success. Research employs the best minds, physicians learn about new therapies, patients gain new treatment opportunities, and the Finnish academic community maintains its international perspective.

The decreasing resources that are available in healthcare and the increasing work-related pressures faced at work diminish the researchers' opportunities to become involved in clinical trials. Critical evaluation of published research calls for personal hands-on experience in doing research. We need a change: besides practical patient work, a research career should also be attractive to doctors in training.

    Smooth permit processes

Smooth and rapid permit processes in healthcare constitute an integral element of research competitiveness and efficiency.

Together with the ethical committees (Sub-Committees on Medical Research Ethics), Pharma Industry Finland has drafted useful tools and documents for the companies assigning clinical trial projects. PIF and the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities have agreed on a template contract to facilitate negotiations on the assignments.
