Healthcare statistics
75% of the healthcare expenses are paid for with public funds. Households account for about one fifth of the expenses. This money is used to pay for primary healthcare, specialist care, medicine reimbursements and other expenses, such as travelling expenses and administration.
During the past 20 years, the structure of Finnish healthcare has changed radically. There are now less inpatient beds, and a growing number of diseases can be treated through outpatient measures. Less hospital days means lower costs. The progress in pharmacotherapies has contributed to the structural change.

Society contributes to the healthcare costs in various ways. Primary healthcare and specialist care are paid for through joint funds. The health insurance is paid for by the insured, their employers and the state. The insurance pays for national sickness allowances and a part of the medication costs. Individual countries organise their public healthcare differently.
