[26/05/2010] Reimbursed vaccines can provide savings to society » At the moment, the vaccines outside the national vaccination programme are not eligible for the Finnish health insurance reimbursement system (the so-called KELA reimbursement) but must be paid the vaccine-takers themselves. PIF’s analysis focusing on the shingles (Herpes Zoster) vaccines shows that the society could draw economic benefits if this vaccine were to be reimbursed. Indeed, we would urgently need an extensive and neutral study on the economic impacts of potentially reimbursable vaccines. The funding and development of the national vaccination programme should also be ensured.
[27/04/2010] One year of reference prices: future focus setting must be a joint effort » On 1 April 2010, the reference price system had been in place for one year. In those twelve months, the Finnish society saved over 150 million euro, generated through the price competition between pharmaceutical companies and the generic substitution performed at pharmacies. We insist that the current standstill in expenditure growth be utilised to develop tools for measuring the societal benefits of medicines (cost effectiveness analyses).
[26/02/2010] Price of innovative medicines pressed down by price competition » The reference price system introduced last spring was expected to boost price competition and direct the patients towards more inexpensive generic medicines. According to the pharmaceutical wholesale index, the price drop was significant. However, the innovative medicines continue to account for an unchanged share of the whole pharmaceutical sales but their prices have decreased dramatically. The wholesale index shows that the prices of reimbursable medicines were 5.6% down.
