What Does Pharma Industry Finland Stands For?

Pharma Industry Finland (PIF) in brief

Pharma Industry Finland (PIF) is the interest organisation of the research-based pharmaceutical industry operating in Finland. With 55 member companies, PIF has its own offices, the elected representative bodies under the Associations Act (Board and its assisting Committees), as well as a pharmaceutical marketing control system, consisting of external operators.

The PIF members range from large-scale multinational companies to Finnish family-owned SMEs, from Finland-based pharmaceutical manufacturers to medicine importers and companies providing clinical trial services. The combined product selection of the member companies comprises prescription-only medicines, self-care medicines sold over the counter and veterinary medicines.

The PIF operations are run through three different workflows:
1. direct communications and interaction with the authorities and other key operators of the pharmaceutical industry (social and political lobbying)
2. communications through publicity and co-operation with the external stakeholders (external communication and projects)
3. co-operation and interaction with the member companies, including the work in committees, workshops and PIF's internal expert networks

The PIF organisation comprises expert work geared to the defence of the industry's interests and communications, as well as the pharmaceutical marketing monitoring system, responsible for enforcing the Code for the Marketing of Medicinal Products. The PIF operations are directed by the Managing Director, also responsible for coordinating the PIF lobbying operations.

Major stakeholders

The pharmaceutical industry is a strongly regulated sector. Therefore, PIF's major stakeholders include the Finnish and EU authorities and political decision-makers. National authoritiesdecide on the reimbursement status of medicines marketed in Finland, while the marketing authorities are regulated on a European level.

The PIF stakeholders also include the Finnish and European patient organisations representing the medicine consumers. In the co-operation with the patient organisations, the major guideline is the respect of the organisations' autonomy.

Pharma Industry Finland is a member the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations, IFPMA and EFPIA, the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations which is the European organisation of the research-based pharmaceutical industry. Since PIF also represents the Finland-based companies manufacturing and selling self-care and veterinary medicines, it is a member of the Association of the European Self-medication Industry (AESGP) and the International Federation for Animal Health Europe (IFAH).

PIF is also a member of the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland. One of the essential elements of this co-operation, the Chemical Industry Federation, handles the labour market policy issues related to the pharmaceutical branch. PIF also collaborates with Finnish Bioindustries, operating under the umbrella of the Chemical Industry Federation. PIF is also a member of the Confederation of Finnish Industries EK and the Federation of Finnish Commerce.
