Medicine policy

Medicines policy-maker

Medicines policy covers the entire operational sphere of the pharmaceutical industry. Pharma Industry Finland PIF wants to be actively involved in the work to develop the sector and to prepare the issues and decisions affecting the pharmaceutical branch.

PIF wants to take active initiative and impact the medicines policy decisions. We also want to show that our expertise provides significant added value to the co-operation between the stakeholders.

Medicines policy is part of the social and health policy while the pharmaceutical service system is an intrinsic element of an efficient Finnish social welfare and healthcare systems.  The pharmaceutical branch cannot be developed in isolation from overall social welfare and healthcare.

Medicines Policy 2020 documents outlines objectives

Pharma Industry Finland PIF was actively involved in the preparation of the Medicines Policy 2020 document published by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. With a perspective to the year 2020, the document defined and outlined the core principles, objectives and measures of the national medicines policy. The major medicines issues will also be raised in the social welfare and health policy strategy 2020 prepared by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

Medicines policy is comprehensive and includes, for example

  • availability of medicines
  • measures to improve the outcome of pharmacotherapies
  • information and other ways to support the patients' self-care
  • safety of medicine use
  • pharmaceutical research
  • development of the regulation concerning medicine prices and reimbursability
  • therapeutic value of medicines and the research potential in this area
  • smooth exchange of patient records.

The Medicines Policy 2020 document was published in 2011. Measures highlighted in the project have followed, geared to bring remedy to problems in pharmacotherapies and the pharmaceutical service system.

The pharmaceutical branch is strongly regulated. Therefore many issues requiring development are also associated with the medicines-related legislation. Pharma Industry Finland PIF wants to be closely involved in the operations to develop the pharmaceutical branch and the respective legislation.

Medicines are an intrinsic part of healthcare, a part of the solution. The document entitled Medicine Policy 2020 is very important for PIF. We collaborate in projects related to the document as well as in legislative development work.
